Windows 10 Rollout from USB drive

You want to deploy Windows 10 to computers on locations without infrastructure. Columbus SmartDeploy be processed from an USB-Stick without losing control which computer should be re-installed.


Prepare USB build Scripts

  • Extract the files of the archive into a temporary folder on the Columbus Server.
  • Edit script "CreateUSBBootMedia_RunAsAdmin.cmd" with a texteditor.
  • Adapt WPED, PETD and PORT according your installation:
    • WPED -> Points to image directory (without architecture)
    • PETD -> Points to the PETemplatesfolder (without architecture)
    •     Enable OS-Deployment from USB with PORT=1
  • Run "CreateUSBBootMedia_RunAsAdmin.cmd" AS ADMINISTRATOR

Prepare USB drive

  • Format a USB Drive with FAT32
  • NOTE: You'll need at least Windows 10 or later to format the drive.
  • Copy the contents of "CopyToUSBDrive" to the previously formated drive.

Updating configuration / drivers

  • Update the configuration in "PETemplates" as needed
  • Run "UpdateConfig.cmd" to update the WinPE images.

Enable Columbus process from USB

  • Open USB:\_PETemplates\<arch>\Common\WinPEConfig.ini
  • Add "PortableMode=1" in the [Options] section
  • Run "UpdateConfig.cmd" to update the WinPE images.
  • Copy following folders from SERVER:\Columbus\OSDepot to USB:\ColumbusUSB\OSDepot
    • _Jobstore
    • DrvStore
    • Any Smart OS Release you want to install. Copy the folder with the corresponding <GUID>

Schedule a SmartDeploy installation

Boot from USB drive

Some Computers request F9 to show boot menu, please check with your hardware manufacturer

On legacy devices, a selection of 32 and 64 will appear. Select the appropriate according your OS to be installed. UEFI devices will automatically boot the correct image.

Known problems

Some USB drive are not recognized as bootable from BIOS/UEFI:
